Instalasi Snow Leopard Via USB

Berdasarkan pengalaman pribadi ketika ingin install ulang Snow Leopard tapi ngga punya DVD SL originalnya. Yang ada adalah image .dmg SL 10.6.3 versi pak tani hasil download sebesar 6.2 gigs.

Dengan ukuran image sebesar itu otomatis harus di-burn menggunakan kepingan DVD dual layer. Berhubung DVD dual layer mahal dan susah dapetinnya, akhirnya saya manfaatkan USB drive external untuk instalasi SL 10.6.3 tersebut. Begini caranya kawan-kawan..

  1. Mount image “Mac OS X Install DVD” either itu berupa ISO atau DMG
  2. Masukkan USB drive, lalu buka Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility), dan pilih USB drive yang ada di sidebar sebelah kiri
  3. Ada pilihan First Aid, Erase, Partition, Raid, Restore
  4. Klik Partition
  5. Pada Volume Scheme, pilih 1 Partition
  6. Setelah itu klik tombol Options. Akan muncul jendela baru, dan pilih ‘GUID Partition Table’. Klik Apply dan tunggu sampai selesai
  7. Setelah proses format / erase selesai, klik pada tab ‘Restore’
  8. Dari daftar drive / partisi yang ada di sebelah kiri, drag ‘Mac OS X Install DVD’ yang udah kita mount pada langkah #1 tadi ke field ‘Source’, dan drag USB drive ke field ‘Destination’
  9. Klik tombol ‘Restore’ dan tunggu sampai prosesnya selesai
  10. Tutup Disk Utility, lalu buka System Preferences. Pada bagian ‘System’ pilih ‘Startup Disk’
  11. USB drive tadi akan muncul sebagai Snow Leopard installation disk. Pilih dan klik ‘Restart’

Mac akan boot melalu USB drive, dan silahkan ikuti langkah2 instalasinya 😉

Mac OS X Lambat Setelah Upgrade 10.6.6

Sebagian pengguna Mac OS X yang udah upgrade ke Snow Leopard 10.6.6 mungkin akan merasakan system menjadi lambat / unresponsive pada menit awal setelah system start up. Saya pun sempat merasakan hal ini.

Setelah bertanya di Apple Discussions, ternyata masalahnya adalah Spotlight yang terus meng-index partisi BOOTCAMP tiap kali Mac reboot. Tentu semakin besar ukuran partisi Windows dan jumlah file yang ada akan mempengaruhi lamanya system menjadi unresponsive. This can’t be a good thing in the long run. Parah2nya sih, harddisk bisa jadi cepet rusak 😀

Cukup basa-basinya, ini solusinya: Exclude partisi BOOTCAMP dari indexing Spotlight. Ada 2 cara (pilih salah satu);

Bagi anda yang bisa Write ke partisi BOOTCAMP / Windows cukup buat file kosong bernama “.metadataneverindex” di root partition Windows (C:). Bisa dengan cara mengetikkan perintah berikut di preman Terminal:

touch /Volumes/XP/.metadataneverindex

di mana “/Volumes/XP” adalah contoh lokasi partisi Windows di Mac saya, dan tentunya akan berbeda dengan lokasi partisi di Mac anda. Apabila saya mengetikkan perintah “ls -la” di partisi tersebut kurang lebih hasilnya sebagai berikut:

Bagi yang tidak bisa Write kedalam partisi BOOTCAMP / Windows, karena belum menginstall NTFS-3G misalnya, anda harus membuat file “.metadataneverindex” melalui Windows (boot kedalam Windows). Tapi karena Windows tidak mengizinkan kita membuat file dengan nama seperti itu secara langsung, caranya menjadi sedikit tricky – tapi tetap ngga susah. Cukup ketik perintah berikut di command prompt (Start > Run > CMD);

fsutil file createnew C:.metadataneverindex 0

voila! just one-single-simple command, otomatis file .metadataneverindex akan berada di root partition Windows, dan ini akan mencegah Spotlight untuk indexing partisi tersebut tiap kali restart.

Hasilnya? Our Mac is now running and booting smooth as silk 😀 😀 😀
